Trying something new

If you are like Jodes and I, you are addicted to pinterest. I have the bad habit, like the rest, to pin recipes with the idea that “some day” Ill make them. Well that “some day” has come. This weekend our friend Alysha is having a Jack and Jill. She asked us to make a couple gift baskets for the occasion. Well I have dusted off a few recipes I’ve been dying to try:

Smores Bars

Funfetti Brownies

Elephant Ear pull apart bread

Mudslide cupcakes

Mocha Frappuccino Cupcakes

AND *drum roll please* Chocolate dipped strawberries, but these strawberries are soaked in flavored alcohol first (these may not be making it to the Jack and Jill because Jodes and I may eat them all-sorry Alysha and Jack and Jill goers)

Whether these recipes are pintrest fails or not, Ill post the recipes and pictures.

Summer is Always Cake Season

So in the past few years there is one thing I just know….summer is busy season. Between all the nieces and nephews birthdays, to baby showers and weddings, this is the time of year where Jen and I are lucky to have a weekend off. Not saying I don’t enjoy our late night ramblings as we are kneading fondant and shaping our latest creation… me it’s hilarious the things we come up with to amuse ourselves in the late hours of the evening.

Our latest adventure was Angry Birds, for my youngest nephew. More specifically the black bomb one from Angry Birds Space. Don’t get me wrong I’ve heard of Angry Birds, but I’ve never actually played it. I had to keep having my dear husband and daughter come in and asking does this look right? You tell me to do a Disney character and I barely have to look at a picture, but some of the newer stuff the kids are into, yeah, a bit out of my normal comfort zone.

Regardless, we are always up for the challenge, of course the bigger challenge of the evening was my daughter and not the cake. She decided it was a great idea to stay up until 1am…ugh.

We made a small cake for the birthday boy, along with a bunch of cupcakes for all the party guests.

The highlight was the candle we decided to submerge inside the gum paste antennae?? (at least that’s what my daughter was calling it), so it could have the real flames coming out at the party.

Well that was last weekend’s adventure in cake, and the summer is far from over……so plenty more to come!!

Welcome to Unconventional Cakery

Unconventional Cakery? Well as you browse through our gallery and get to know us a bit further, trust me it will all make sense.  We are anything, but your traditional cake bakers.  We learn through trial and error, not only with our cakes, but really with everyday life.  We like trying new things and experimenting.  Sometimes our plans may not go the way we expect and we are trying to find a work around, but that’s really how life is….we all make mistakes and we learn from them and finding better ways to do things as we go.

This blog is what I would like to call a spinoff of our little cake business.  Of course you will see posts with our newest adventures in cake, but since we don’t do cake all the time like a bakery on main street, you will see posts about recipes we try, our pinterest trials and fails, crafts and even the occasional crazy quote from Jodi’s daughter, who like most girls her age can say some of the darndest things.

We invite you along on our creative journey, wherever the road may bring us.
